An undisputed icon of motoring, the Jaguar E-Type combined race-proven engineering with gorgeous styling that has earned it a rightful place in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. The most desirable E-Types are the covered-headlamp Series I models, with the pure early production 3.8-litre examples highly sought after by discerning collectors. Those built in 1961, the E-Type’s first year of production, are the most prized, particularly those with a combination of welded louvres on the bonnet and flat floors.
This stunning 3.8-Litre Roadster was built on August 29, 1961 and is one of the E-Types that features the welded louvres and flat floors. Originally sold through Jaguar Cars in New York, this car was finished in the striking color scheme of Cotswold Blue with Dark Blue leather trim and a blue soft top. Its first owner was E. Tharlson of Palm Desert, California, and the Jaguar would remain in that state until 2015.
David Shield purchased the Jaguar in 2001, then showing less than 55,000 miles with a restoration already underway. The engine had been freshly rebuilt and over a period of years, the restoration progressed, component by component. The respected Sherm’s Custom Plating of Sacramento provided the show-quality brightwork, while UK specialist Suffolk & Turley provided the leather interior, and Classic Jaguar of Austin rebuilt the inboard-brake/rear-differential assembly. Dave Ferguson’s renowned Images Auto Body of Campbell, California, prepared the bodywork, returned it to its original Cotswold Blue livery, and oversaw the Roadster’s final assembly.
At every stage, special care was taken to complete the restoration as authentically as possible. NOS fasteners were sourced and installed while proper plating and coatings were applied throughout the car. The result is truly spectacular. Finished in its elegant original colors, the E-Type is a crowd favorite any time it is shown. Following restoration, the remarkable Jaguar was invited for display at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in August 2014, and was presented at the Niello Concours at Serrano in El Dorado Hills, California in October that year.
Today, the E-Type remains in superb condition, showing that careful maintenance has remained a priority. Consistent with its outstanding presentation, this Jaguar is offered with books, tools, jack, workshop manual, and a dossier of records – as well as an album of restoration photos, and JDHT Certificate confirming its original build details and component numbers.
