Post-WWII America was brimming with optimism and opportunity, and Cadillac sought to take advantage of US economic expansion by positioning itself as the country’s preeminent luxury car builder. This stunningly restored 1949 Series 61 Sedanette is a superb example of the clean, modern lines Cadillac utilized to draw a generation of affluent Americans into its showrooms. All new for the 1949 model year was Cadillac’s first overhead valve V-8 engine, which the company touted in sales literature as its “greatest engineering achievement in 45 years.” Heavily influenced by the Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft, the Sedanette’s acclaimed fastback design is widely regarded as an inspiration behind the magnificent H.J. Mulliner-bodied Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback.
This distinguished Series 61 Sedanette is presented in its original color combination of Dartmouth Green over a tan interior. Under the ownership of Cadillac enthusiast Peter Hoffman, it received a frame-off restoration in 2008 and 2009 by RJ CARS of Arkport, New York. Once completed, it garnered awards at local concours before being spotted by respected collector Marshall Kraus of Sacramento in 2012. Following a long and emotional negotiation, Mr. Kraus purchased the Cadillac and it soon became his pet project, continuing to refine and improve the car. Upon Mr. Krause’s passing in 2019, the Cadillac was acquired by his close friend, the consignor.
This 1949 Cadillac continues to present beautifully and is accompanied by an impressive file of restoration receipts, correspondence and photos as well as an original 1949 Cadillac brochure and booklets. It stands ready to please its next owner with its timeless style and flair.
