Originally born out of the necessity to comply with FIA homologation regulations, Porsche’s 911 Turbo, or 930, quickly became a symbol of performance and innovation. For the 1990 model year, a second-generation Turbo arrived, bringing with it significant advancements. Based on the revised 964-series platform, this iteration of the Turbo presented sleeker aerodynamics and more integrated design elements. The introduction of features such as anti-lock brakes, power steering, air bags, and effective air-conditioning represented a significant leap forward in terms of comfort and safety. Underneath, lightweight alloy control arms and coil springs replaced an antiquated torsion-bar setup.

While the 964 Turbo initially retained the same lag-prone 3.3-liter engine as its predecessor, an enlarged and more powerful 3.6-liter M64 engine was introduced for the 1993 model year. Boasting 355 hp at 5,500 rpm and 384 lbs./ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm, the new engine delivered a smoother and more predictable power delivery throughout the rev range, resulting in an improved and more exhilarating driving experience.

This Rest of World (ROW) market 964 Turbo 3.6 is finished in the eye-catching and exceptionally rare color scheme of Cobalt Blue Metallic over a full black leather interior. According to the consignor, as few as five examples of the Turbo 3.6 were originally specified in this attractive livery, with only one other featuring black upholstery.

Completed by the factory in April 1993, this Turbo 3.6 was delivered to Mizwa Motors, Porsche’s official Japanese distributor. In addition to the lengthy list of standard Turbo equipment, additional extras noted on its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity included “Equipment for Japan,” a green graduated tinted windshield, electric sliding sunroof, and Yokohama tires. Sold new by Mizwa to its first owner on July 12, 1993, this Turbo received regular attention through the official Japanese Porsche dealer network as evidenced by its stamped maintenance logbook on file. In June 2014, this Turbo returned to Germany, where it was kept among a private collection until its acquisition by the current American owner.

Supplied with books, tools, spare tire, delivery accessories, Porsche COA, records, and other documentation, the Cobalt Blue 964 Turbo 3.6 displayed just under 40,000 km – or approximately 25,000 miles – at the time of cataloguing. The recipient of a recent concours-level detailing and servicing, this Turbo presents very much like when it departed the Porsche factory in 1993, except for a KW coil-over suspension system and updated Porsche Classic Radio. With its outstanding and uncommon color scheme, pristine original condition, and low mileage, this rare ROW Turbo 3.6 stands out as one of the finest, most compelling examples available in recent years, and would undoubtedly elevate any Porsche collection with its unique presence.
