Magnat-Debon, founded by Joseph Seraphin Magnat and Louis Auguste Debon, was initially based in Lyon, France, before settling in Grenoble in 1893. The company originally made bicycles in an ultra-modern, self-contained factory and switched to motorcycles in 1902. They were finished in the same black and green color scheme and powered by both two- and four-stroke engines. Magnat-Debon secured patents on many of their technical innovations including brake systems and overhead valves for use in motorcycle engines.

In 1923, the factory became part of the large Terrot cycle and motorcycle empire based in Dijon. By 1929, Magnat-Debon was a sous marque (secondary brand) of Terrot, by which Terrot bikes would be the latest models and the Magnat-Debons, being identical, would be introduced a season later and at a lower price. Terrot/Magnat-Debon ultimately closed its doors in 1962.

The strength of Magnat-Debon was their touring range between the wars, the side-valves, such as this one, being light, frugal and immensely reliable. Company slogans included “the mark of the connoisseur” and “the quality motorcycle.” This machine from circa 1929 has superb patina, appearing dans son jus (original and as found). It features rare monogrammed silencers, tool bags, and a Marchal headlight. This is an exceptionally rare example to be found in the US, and it was purchased by the Mullin Collection from noted collector Somer Hooker in 2013.
