Upon being selected to create an exhibit of “Man’s Aspiration of the Automobile” at the 1967 International and Universal Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada, Alfa Romeo turned to Marcello Gandini and Bertone to create a groundbreaking and memorable prototype. Overwhelmingly positive reaction to the Gandini design prodded Alfa Romeo to move forward with the extraordinary coupe. Unveiled at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, the production car was based on the proven 105 chassis and powered by a modified tipo 33 aluminum-alloy, twin-cam V-8 through a ZF five-speed gearbox and rear limited-slip differential. It was dubbed the Montreal.
According to its Certificato di Origine, this 1971 Alfa Romeo Montreal was built on July 29, 1971, and destined for the Italian market. Its lithe silhouette is resplendent in Rosso (Red) with Nero (Black) cloth interior. Imported to the US in 2018, the car is a recent Alfa Romeo Owners Club Concours award winner and is offered with its tool kit, certificate of origin, RIAR Homologation Certificate, papers, and literature. With its SPICA fuel injection, power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, excellent bolstered seating, and Jaeger instrumentation, this Montreal is a classic that can be comfortably enjoyed on modern thoroughfares. What’s more, its wonderful wood-rimmed steering wheel, striking red carpeting, and the song of its high-strung Alfa Romeo V-8, will surely transport its new owner back to the winding two-lane roads of 1971 Italy.
