The Land Rover Defender – a brilliant, modern interpretation of the legendary original Land Rover series which launched in 1948 – made its debut as the 110 in 1983, and the shorter version, the 90, followed a year later. Though the world now knows them by their ubiquitous name, it was not until 1990 that the model officially gained the name “Defender.” An evolution of the Series III Land Rover, the 110 shared most of its body panels with the outgoing model, but the venerable 3.5-litre petrol V-8, and the new 2.5-litre turbodiesel powerplants were among the most popular of many subsequent engines. The Defender series vehicles are some of the most iconic and capable 4x4s ever made. They have become desirable collectibles throughout the world and are particularly prized in the US, as they were sold stateside only from 1993 to 1997. Over the years, others have found their way to American shores.
The “Defender” 110 offered here is a Rest of World example that has been lavished with numerous upgrades and restorative work in the hands of its current and previous owners. It is presented in gray metallic and a black vinyl interior, with seating for nine passengers. According to one previous account documented on file, the 110 received extensive restorative work by Land Rover specialists which included a repaint of its bare, rolling shell, new doors, and service to the braking and suspension systems. New black powder-coated, Sawtooth-design wheels with new tires are further stated to have been installed under prior ownership.
In 2021, the beautifully outfitted Land Rover joined the consignor’s stable and work was performed to further enhance its aesthetics and usability. According to a work summary on file from Land Rover experts Special Vehicles Ltd. of Exeter, Rhode Island, the 110 received numerous upgrades with parts and labor totaling over $46,000. New Euro-style front lighting was installed as well as a new set of black wheel arches, new factory-style headliner, full-length roof rack, and a bank of Hella off-road lights were added. A winch-ready front bumper with wraparound bars was installed and finished with a Rough Country 9500 Series steel cable winch. A pair of bench seats with seat belts were added in the cargo area, accessed by a rear folding step.
Taken altogether, this 110, a model seldom seen in the US, makes a bold statement that underscores its historic design and classic proportions as well as its off-road capabilities. It would make a fantastic choice for memorable adventures from the suburbs to the arctic tundra.
