The Land Cruiser traces its origins to 1951 as a mobility vehicle for Japan’s National Police Reserve. Through more than seven decades, the Land Cruiser has sold more than 10 million examples, and has set the benchmark for durability, reliability, and off-road capability. For 1960, the Land Cruiser was redesigned and updated, and while not dissimilar in appearance to its predecessor, the newest-generation FJ40 featured more rectangular wheel arches, a bezel framing the headlamps and radiator grille, and folding jump seats in the cargo area. Mechanically, the FJ40 received an enlarged engine and low-range gearing increasing its off-road capabilities.

The FJ40 presented here was restored in the early 2010s in Arctic White, with great attention to detail. It was acquired by the current owner in 2013, and receipts on file document that it has received approximately $28,000 in additional work, a majority of which was performed by the noted Boston Sportscar Company. The invoices detail upgrades to the electrical system, suspension, steering, and brakes, in addition to a rebuilt engine. The car has been raised 1 1/2" from its stock height and is fitted with a WARN 10,000-pound winch, as well as a roof rack with additional lamps for off-road excursions. There is perhaps no better choice of vehicle for a vintage off-road event, and its enclosed body shell and factory heater provide warmth and comfort in most any situation. As affection for the vintage FJ40 increases, this faithfully presented example will continue to impress in most any climate or angle of ascent.
