“The Guy Webster Ducati 750 SS: without doubt my all time favorite motorcycle. This example belonged to the collection of the most famous rock and roll photographer of the 70s. It flies at speed with ease and is the 250 GT California Spider of motorcycles.” -Adam Lindemann
In Imola, Italy, on a damp April day in 1972, 70,000 spectators packed the grounds that hosted the inaugural Imola 200. On this fast, old-style Grand Prix circuit, they witnessed one of the most historic motorcycle races of all time.
Ducati had specially prepared eight new desmodromic-valve 750 cc racers in an effort to defeat the dominant Giacomo Agostini on his MV Agusta. In a tremendous upset, Ducati riders Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari did just that, the victory ushering in a new era for the firm, setting it on course for decades of international success. In 1974, recognizing the victory’s importance, Ducati produced 401 homologation specials called the 750 Super Sport, which were road-going versions of the Imola 200 winner. They have since become one of the most collectible and sought-after motorcycles of all time.
According to a report on file by marque expert Ian Falloon, this example has a known ownership history dating back to 1974, when it was first purchased in Canada by racer Trevor Dunne. Falloon reports that in 1975, Dunne moved to California, obtaining a 9/75 VIN foil and registering the bike as a 1975 model. He campaigned it at various tracks near Los Angeles, preparing it for competition with several upgrades, including a wider rear rim, competition exhaust, and Lockheed front brakes, along with engine work performed by Woods Motor Shop in Glendale. In the 1980s, the Super Sport was owned by enthusiast Marco Barcia and in 1985 he sold it to legendary rock and roll photographer and noted motorcycle collector Guy Webster. Webster eventually amassed one of the finest Italian motorcycle collections in the world and his bikes were displayed at prestigious events for years, including at the Guggenheim Museum.
In 2009, Webster sold the Ducati to collector Tim Reed, who then sold it to the consignor in 2020. According to Falloon’s report, he believes the mileage of under 18,000 kilometers to be original and notes that the bike retains its all-important factory-applied crankcase seal. Falloon also notes the genuine and correct engine and frame stampings and opines that, as the Ducati remains in basically unrestored condition, it is one of only a handful of original paint examples in existence. Importantly, the Super Sport is listed in Ian Falloon and Phil Schilling’s 750 Super Sport Registry. It has also been featured on the cover of Classic Bike, as well as in articles in Robb Report and Cycle World. The Ducati benefited from service work in 2021, performed by noted 750 Super Sport expert Moto Borgotaro of Brooklyn, New York. It received further service work by Brennan Motorsports of East Hampton, New York, in 2022.
This Super Sport displays a fascinating patina along with countless hallmarks of originality, making it an especially desirable and unique example. The bike also retains its desirable period upgrades for rideability, including its wider rear rim and Lockheed front brakes. With incredible power and torque from low revs, an intoxicating exhaust note, and confidence-inspiring handling, these bikes provide one of the most unforgettable and impressive riding experiences in all of motorcycling.
The 750 Super Sport is one of the most collectible and sought-after motorcycles in the world, combining stunning good looks with unparalleled performance. Add to that its extreme rarity, technical innovation, and the fact that it is a direct result of Ducati’s greatest racing victory and you have a truly special machine. These motorcycles evoke powerful reactions in all who admire them, and provide an even more transformative experience to the few that are fortunate enough to enjoy them on the open road. This example, with its captivating patina, known history from new, and exceptional provenance make it an outstanding prize worthy of the finest collections.
