BMW built its first motorcycle – the R23 – in 1923, and it utilized a horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine mated to a shaft-drive system. This architecture has been retained and refined over decades, and is still used in many BMWs 100 years later. For many aficionados of the brand, a high-water mark of twin-cylinder BMWs is the /6 model that was introduced in 1974. Three displacements were offered, with the range-topping 900 cc R90/6 considered among the finest motorcycles of its era.
The ultimate expression of the BMW /6 is the R90S, such as the exquisite example offered here. The S model featured a higher compression ratio and 38 mm Dell’Orto carburetors replaced the standard 32 mm Bings, resulting in a 7 hp boost to 67 bhp at 7,000 rpm. Additional features exclusive to the R90S were a larger fuel tank, twin front brake discs, auxiliary clock and voltmeter, and a handlebar-mounted fairing. Of the two available colors, this example’s Daytona Orange is easily the most sought after, and was the color used by Reg Pridmore during his AMA Superbike championship season onboard an R90S in 1976.
This example is beautifully presented and finished in Daytona Orange, its fuel tank carrying the signature of Reg Pridmore. Importantly, the BMW bears the same, matching numbers on its headstock tag, stamped frame number, and engine. It was purchased by Adam Lindemann in March 2022 via BMW specialist Moto Borgotaro of Brooklyn, New York and stands ready to highlight a new collection.
