A historically interesting commemorative cigarette box, applied with a cast silver, highlighted map of Europe with various locations indicated including London, Munich, Paris, Praha, Helsinki, and Moscou, and featuring the inscription "Peace for our Time, London – Munich Sept 29 1938, Munich – London Sept 30 1938." The cedar-lined interior with single, central divider has an engraved plaque "To Lord Londonderry from his grateful passenger on a memorable flight G.W.P."
The box was presented by George Ward Price (1886–1961), the Daily Mail's celebrated foreign correspondent, to Charles, 7th Marquess of Londonderry, K.G. (1878–1949), to commemorate their flight to Munich at the time of the signing of the Munich Agreement with Hitler in September 1938. Ward Price was a graduate of Cambridge University, became a journalist and was eventually recruited by the Daily Mail as special foreign correspondent. Because of the Daily Mail’s pro-Hitler stance at that time, he was welcomed by Hitler and afforded privileges not available to other journalists. A close friend of Oswald Mosley, he was a frequent visitor to Germany, including The Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgarden.
