Original watercolor heightened with gouache. Signed, mounted, framed, and glazed. A finely detailed and superbly executed painting by Germany's leading automobile artist Walter Gotschke (1912–2000), depicting Tazio Nuvolari in the Type C Auto-Union at Nürburgring in 1936.
Gotschke's impressionistic works have a style all of their own. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career, from the 1930s when he created several fine motor racing posters, and through WWII as a war artist of note. The 1950s to 1970s saw his work attain worldwide interest, and this painting was illustrated in the prestigious American publication Automobile Quarterly in 1971. The editor of Automobile Quarterly, Scott Bailey, was a great fan of Gotschke's work and the publication featured an unprecedented two major features of Gotschke paintings, in 1971 and in 1989. Opportunities to acquire original paintings by Gotschke are exceedingly rare.
