Introduced in 1954 as a replacement for Jaguar’s highly successful XK120, the evolutionary XK140 offered greater interior space, rack and pinion steering, better braking, and more compliant suspension including telescopic shock absorbers. While the XK140 Roadster was supplied with a lightweight folding top and plastic side curtains, the Drophead Coupe model featured a heavier, canvas-lined convertible hood and wind-up windows for a quieter, more comfortable driving experience, even in less-than favorable weather conditions.
On July 4, 1955, this handsome XK140 Drophead Coupe was purchased new by G.P. Dale of Sandridge, St. Albans, UK. Mr. Dale retained the car for more than 32 years before selling it to the consignor on February 21, 1988. In October 1990, Jaguar specialists at Autech Classic Cars Ltd. in England, were commissioned to perform a full frame-off mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The car was driven and lovingly maintained until 2014, when it was retired from the road due to the consignor’s declining health. In 2021, it was taken from static storage and returned to running order by XK specialists Twyford Moors in Clanfield. Photos and receipts for the 1990 project and receipts for the 2021 mechanical refurbishment accompany the sale. Having just two long-term owners from new and benefiting from an extensive older restoration in attractive colors, this rare, right-hand-drive 1955 Jaguar XK140 presents today as a warmly patinated example of Jaguar’s flagship sports car.
