Introduced in October 1959, the Bentley S2 improved upon its predecessor by adopting the new Rolls-Royce 6.2-litre L-series aluminum V-8 to replace the S1’s inline six-cylinder powerplant. The S2 employed an automatic four-speed transmission, standard power steering, electric window lifts, improved air-conditioning, and a new dashboard. Within the new S2 line, Bentley offered the Continental, which was built to be a driver’s car, boasting higher performance engines and gearing to complement the lighter bodywork of sportier models.

Of the 388 S2 Continentals built, this Drophead Coupe is one of just 125 featuring this strikingly handsome coachwork by Park Ward of London. Designed by Vilhelm Koren of Norway, the Park Ward S2 Drophead Coupe features a straight wing line from stem to stern, outboard headlights, and a grille shell reduced by 3" in height for a sleek, modern appearance. The Bentley was originally finished in Sand with a beige top and interior, and first purchased by iron, steel, and tinplate producer Richard Thomas & Baldwins Ltd. in South Wales. Though much of its history is unknown, the current owner acquired the Bentley from P&A Wood and then commissioned marque specialist Michael Hibberd to complete a multiyear restoration beginning in 2015. Receipts and photographs of the frame-off undertaking are included in the sale. Following completion, it was awarded First in Class, against stiff competition, at the Bentley Centenary Concoursat Salon Privé. Finished in silver with scarlet leather interior and canvas top, this extraordinary and beautiful S2 Continental Drophead Coupe is certain to intrigue the astute Bentley aficionado.
