The Rover Company built luxury automobiles, but in the aftermath of WWII, the market for fine cars was simply nonexistent. To compound Rover’s predicament, the British government stringently rationed raw materials to companies manufacturing industrial and agricultural equipment. In 1947, Rover’s chief designer, Maurice Wilks, developed a plan to build a small utility vehicle for farm and light industrial use. The Land Rover Series I was born. Introduced at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, it was intended to be a temporary offering to sustain Rover until it could restart automobile production. Wilks could never have anticipated that his creation, stemming from a moment of desperation for the company, would become a world-renowned icon of utility and adventure.
This 1952 Land Rover Series I was previously owned by marque restoration specialist Ken Wheelwright, a pre-eminent authority on early Land Rovers whose restorations are featured in museums around the world. According to a note on file written by Wheelwright regarding his restoration work, this Series I was treated to a high-level concours restoration, including work to its engine, gearbox, braking system, wiring, suspension, fuel tank, exhaust, and interior. Its meticulously refurbished body was finished in the gorgeous color of Bronze Green. Equally at home on the show field, working the farm, or going for a Sunday drive, the opportunity to own this wonderfully restored Land Rover legend should not be missed.
