Among the most adventurous Classic Era automobiles, the Packard Darrin Convertible Sedan was only produced for 1940, with just 11 examples built on the 138" wheelbase Model 1807 Super Eight chassis.
This example was delivered new to the Evanston, Illinois, Packard dealer and priced at $6,300. By 1951, it was located in Arvin, California, and stored there until 1967, when it was discovered by Dr. Richard Steiner of Torrance, California, who purchased and restored the rare Packard in consultation with Howard “Dutch” Darrin, who had retired in nearby Santa Monica. The restoration was finished in 1994 and, on June 8, 1995, Dr. Steiner debuted it at the CCCA Grand Classic in California, where it was judged at 98 points. It eventually earned its CCCA Premier badge, still affixed to the vehicle’s cowl. In May 1996, Dr. Steiner sold the Packard to the distinguished collector Otis Chandler who registered it as “DARRIN 1.” It remained with Mr. Chandler until 2003, passing through a well-known West Coast collection, before being acquired by Richard and Linda Kughn, who displayed the vehicle at Meadow Brook Hall, EyesOn Design, and Amelia Island. In 2010, it received CCCA Premier honors with a First Place at the Grand Classic meet in Michigan. John O. Bohmer acquired the Packard in mid-2014. Nicely preserved and presented, this Packard Darrin features numerous period accessories including driving lights, bumper guards, radio, heater, backup light, and Econo-Drive overdrive.
