Developed in the wake of the Citroën-Maserati corporate marriage of 1968, the SM featured Citroën’s front-drive chassis and super-smooth hydropneumatic suspension, with power delivered by a Maserati V-6 engine.
This lovely US-specification Citroën SM is finished in white over a beautifully preserved brown leather interior, which along with the paint, is believed by the consignor to be original. The Citroën was discovered by the consignor in Mercer Island, Washington, in 2014, stored in the garage of the original owner’s son with just 15,002 miles showing on the odometer. After its purchase, the consignor, a notable Citroën enthusiast and collector based in the Pacific Northwest, immediately started a sympathetic mechanical refurbishment. Documented by receipts on file, the refurbishment included attention to the engine, hydraulic system, brakes, suspension, and air-conditioning, as well as the installation of European-specification swiveling headlights, new Michelin tires, and stainless steel exhaust manifolds. It has since been enjoyed for approximately 2,800 miles, providing the driving enjoyment that can only come from an unrestored car.
This is an attractive and engaging example of these highly advanced and powerful GT machines, and its 2.7-liter, five-speed specification is all the more alluring when its originality is factored in. Accompanied by an owner’s manual and more than 20 pages of itemized service and parts receipts, the SM is ready to be admired by its next steward, who will undoubtedly be drawn to its many charms.
