With the introduction of the 500 SLC in 1980, Mercedes-Benz launched a host of new equipment creating a model that allowed for eligibility in international rally racing, sanctioned by the FIA. In order to qualify, 1,000 “Homologation” models had to be built. Featuring a lightweight aluminum hood and deck lid, and an aluminum engine air-cleaner housing, the SLC’s front and rear spoilers kept the car stable at its 142 mph top speed. Most importantly, Mercedes-Benz included its new engine – the 5.0-liter, aluminum-block V-8 – realizing a weight savings of over 200 pounds.

According to a copy of its German title on file, this remarkably well cared-for SLC was first sold to Fa. Werker Grundstücksgesellschaft of Wolfsburg, Germany. As indicated by the factory service booklet, the car was routinely maintained under its first owner. Imported into the US in May 1985, its second owner, Kurt Andrews of Apple Valley, Minnesota, meticulously maintained the SLC and used it sparingly over the next few decades before it recently joined the consignor’s collection of German sports cars.

Resplendent in Champagne (DB 473) paint with Brown (DB 233) leather interior and a burled-walnut-wood dashboard, this 500 SLC exudes elegance, while providing exhilarating performance from its rally-derived mechanical underpinnings. Exceptionally rare in the US, this highly original 500 SLC is sure to provide a delightful driving experience.
