In October 1956, Ford introduced the 1957 Thunderbird, the final iteration of its very successful two-seater convertible. The 1957 model received numerous styling updates, including a revised front grille, gracefully slanted fins, and a 6" longer body, allowing the spare tire to be moved from the rear bumper into the trunk compartment. Inside, there was an improved instrument panel, revised upholstery, and a padded dash.
Dale Hungate of Long Beach, California, purchased this 1957 Thunderbird on June 17, 1957. According to the original window sticker, included in the sale, it was delivered in Raven Black with red interior, and included options such as Ford-O-Matic transmission, tinted glass, Signal Seek radio, Dial-A-Matic seat, and hardtop. When prominent Arizona-based auto dealer Brent Berge was in search of a nice example of an “early bird” for his wife – 1966 Miss America Deborah Bryant – this 1957 fit the bill. In 1990, Mr. Berge had the car restored, changing the paint to the striking Torch Red with white interior it wears today. Aftermarket air-conditioning and hidden stereo system were fitted to make it a more comfortable car to drive. Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels add to the Thunderbird’s visual impact. In 2001, it was purchased by the consignor and she has enjoyed it sparingly around her California home for over two decades. Today, this 1957 Ford Thunderbird presents as a finely maintained older restoration, making it an excellent candidate to drive and enjoy.
