While best-known for its racing and luxury cars, several of Hispano-Suiza’s early models were brilliantly, if conservatively, engineered, utilizing proven side-valve engine architecture. Nonetheless, the resulting Type 24 8/10 HP, built from 1914 to 1922, incorporated founder Marc Birkigt’s engineering prowess and showcased the company’s superb castings, high-quality machining, and renowned construction techniques utilizing a small chassis. This utterly charming 1916 Hispano-Suiza, chassis 2835, is a wonderful example of these important Type 24 models. According to notes on file, it was manufactured in Barcelona in August 1916, and was part of a private collection, likely since the early 1960s. By March 2013, it had been purchased in Úbeda, Andalucía, Spain, by the current owner, and the following month the Hispano was registered in the UK as “BF 6414.”
This Type 24 features several stylistic elements of the celebrated “King Alfonso XIII” cars, including the bold, brass radiator shell, the hood and cowl line, and the large, high-mounted headlamps. Many original components remain present and stamped with the Hispano-Suiza trademark, including the hood hinge, controls, fasteners, and carburetor. Sympathetic overhauling under the current owner includes attention to the engine, brakes, and gearbox. Select refurbishments included installation of a new mohair top and a re-trimmed interior, faithfully matching the original. New tires were also fitted. A crucial model to the early fortunes of Marc Birkigt’s company, this 1916 Hispano-Suiza Type 24 8/10 HP is a delightfully presented example of these immensely stylish and engaging Edwardian motorcars.
