The 1954 New York International Auto Show saw the debut of the 190 SL alongside the highly anticipated road-going version of the 300 SL Gullwing. A new 1.9-liter, inline-four, SOHC engine, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, powered the more affordable convertible. Its long hood, short rear deck, bumpers, grille, and curvaceous profile gave a nod to the 300 SL but retained a character unique to itself. A hit among buyers, 25,881 examples of the 190 SL were built, with most destined for the US market.
Built during the model’s final-production year, this exceptional 190 SL is finished in its original Weissgrau (White Gray, DB 158) with a red leather interior and accented by a Graphite Grey (DB 190) removable hardtop, which is complete with its storage crate. Its exemplary restoration in 2011 by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California, is a testament to the importance of the model, and it is uncommon to see a 190 SL completed to its level. In 2018, it deservedly received a class award at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. Exercised regularly, the Mercedes-Benz was treated to a fluid servicing, carburetor tuning, and overall inspection in early 2023, with its systems and finishes still in impressive condition.
The 190 SL launched the philosophy of a more attainable Sport-Leicht model – a legacy that lasts to this day within the Mercedes-Benz lineup. A meticulously restored example in a desirable color combination such as this is well suited for any German-focused collection.
