Internally designated “W113,” the 230 SL ushered in a new era of Sport-Leicht motoring for Mercedes-Benz customers with a modern, mid-century design and updated engineering to match. It featured a new 2.3-liter inline-six utilizing mechanical fuel injection – highly advanced for the time. The new Paul Bracq- designed sports car was a worthy and chic replacement for the outgoing 300 SL.

This 230 SL is an early production, first model-year example that has been lovingly cared for over the course of its lifetime. In 2011, the Pagoda was the subject of a thorough, concours-quality restoration at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California. During its restoration, a fresh coat of its original Graphite Grey (DB 190) paint was applied, and a new interior in its original red was fitted. Performance-wise, the four-speed manual gearbox was rebuilt, a new clutch was installed, and its matching-numbers inline six-cylinder also underwent significant reconditioning. Chassis 000279 showed 75,369 miles when catalogued, and recently completed an inspection and fluid service.

Considering its combination of elegant design, stout performance, and overall reliability, it is no surprise that the Pagoda has continued to rise in popularity since its debut 60 years ago. Accompanied by its original owner’s and service manuals, this masterfully restored and thoroughly detailed 230 SL offers an opportunity to own one of the finest Pagodas.
