Carrozzeria Pininfarina’s crest and script have adorned countless Ferrari models since 1952, when the company was commissioned to build coachwork for the 212 Inter. Since that time, nearly every production Ferrari, with only a few exceptions, has been designed by Pininfarina, continuing well into the 2000s.

To pay tribute to one of the longest-running and most successful pairings in the automotive industry, Ferrari introduced the limited-production 599 SA Aperta at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The “S” in SA stands for company principal Sergio Pininfarina, while the “A” is for his late son, Andrea, and Aperta translates to “open” in Italian. In a nod to the design company’s 80th year since its founding in Cambiano, Italy, only 80 units of the exclusive model were built, making it among the rarest-production Ferraris of all time.

The SA Aperta maintained the aggressive looks of the closed-top 599 GTO on which it was based, but both the windscreen and ride height were lowered, helping to create an even sleeker silhouette. The rearward flying-buttress-sail panels of the berlinetta, which helped direct air and generate downforce, were retained but reshaped, as they were considered vital both aerodynamically and aesthetically. Rather than a folding soft top or electrically operated hideaway roof, the SA Aperta sported a beautifully designed, lightweight carbon fiber and fabric roof top that lifted off to reveal twin-integrated roll hoops with a profile that closely emulated that of the seat headrests.

The 599 SA Aperta was very closely related to the 599 GTO under the skin. The six-liter V-12 employed in the GTO – essentially lifted from the track-only 599XX and derived from the Enzo supercar – could be found under the hood, producing 670 hp at 8,250 rpm and 457 lbs./ft. of torque. Tying it to Ferrari’s F1-style sequential electronic gearbox made the lightning-quick, 60 millisecond upshifts and 120 millisecond downshifts possible. The GTO also lent to the SA Aperta its massive Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and magnetorheological dampers, which could be adjusted on demand with a twist of the manettino dial – a steering wheel-mounted switch that also managed the stability-control intervention and the transmission shift speed. The Aperta delivered 0–60 mph in a breathtaking 3.3 seconds, and a top speed of 208 mph has been quoted – the same as the GTO.

The car offered here was purchased new in 2011 by the consignor via Steve Harris Imports, and was delivered in an intimate ceremony at the Ferrari factory in Maranello. It is the first North American-specification Aperta built and also the first Aperta to be delivered at the factory. Finished in spectacular Nero (Black) over Nero leather with red inserts and stitching, the Aperta was driven by the consignor and his wife through Italy in the days following delivery, visiting Villa d’Este, St Moritz, and Monaco before being shipped to its home in the US. This journey became the subject of a feature article penned by the consignor for the November 2011 issue of Road & Track magazine. The interior features full-power carbon fiber sports seats with red Daytona-style straps and further use of polished carbon fiber on much of the inside trim. On the outside, this car is set apart by Scuderia Ferrari cloisonné fender shields, carbon ceramic brakes with red calipers, and five-spoke alloy wheels.

Driven as Ferrari intended by its dedicated enthusiast owner, this noteworthy example of the timeless 599 SA Aperta showed 14,880 miles at the time of cataloguing and received consistent care from the local official Ferrari dealership, including a recent service. This outstanding Ferrari presents in stunning condition, and is accompanied by its Ferrari Classiche Red Book, original manuals, factory-fitted luggage, tool kit, factory car cover, and a fire extinguisher. Also included is the artful model sculpture from Ferrari. As one of the most ideally specified examples of just 80 cars built, this one-owner 599 SA Aperta represents an important opportunity to purchase an extremely exclusive and desirable high-performance open Ferrari.
