Sold new in 1959 to Mrs. Bertha “Tiny” Lutfy, this exceptional Mercedes-Benz 220 S Coupe was enthusiastically driven to and from professional trap-and-skeet shooting competitions throughout Europe. Ordered new from the factory with optional Hellblau (Light Blue, DB 334G) paint, Natural leather (1068), Birdseye maple wood, a Becker Mexico radio, and a Karl Baisch luggage set, the 220 S was shipped to Arizona to receive rare dealer-installed air-conditioning before being shipped back to Europe to continue Mrs. Lutfy’s adventures. In 1963, the car returned to the Lutfy home in Arizona, where it stayed for the next 57 years. Tiny’s son, Dr. Phillip Lutfy, is a top restorer and collector of classic Mercedes-Benz. To honor his mother, and after many years of cherishing the 220 S, Dr. Lutfy performed a thorough restoration in the 1990s highlighting the car’s original Light Blue color. Rarely seen since completion, the extraordinary Mercedes-Benz Coupe was stored in Dr. Lutfy’s climate-controlled Scottsdale, Arizona, facility alongside his world-renowned collection of postwar Mercedes-Benz automobiles until 2020, and soon thereafter it was acquired by the consignor.
Never before offered for public sale, acquiring this family heirloom is a rare opportunity. This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Coupe is one of very few examples in the world to receive such an extensive expert restoration. This dignified Coupe presents beautifully and will catch the eye of any discerning Mercedes-Benz enthusiast as a truly special find.
