Beginning as early as 1955, Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger tasked his engineers and designers with creating a singular replacement for both the storied 190 SL and 300 SL models. The new car was to possess sports car performance coupled with Mercedes-Benz comfort and reliability. Introduced at the 1963 Geneva International Motor Show, the new Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Roadster delivered with bold new styling, an optional removable hardtop, a Bosch fuel-injected inline six-cylinder engine, four-wheel independent suspension, and power-assisted front disc brakes. To demonstrate the car’s performance capabilities, Mercedes-Benz Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut famously drove a 230 SL at Annemasse Vétraz-Monthoux to a best lap time of 47.5 seconds – just two-tenths of a second slower than Grand Prix driver Mike Parkes in a V-12 Ferrari 250 GT.

Presented in Dark Maroon (DB 460) with an immaculate brown leather interior, this meticulously restored 230 SL is complemented by the tall, slightly concave hardtop that gave the Mercedes-Benz its nickname, the “Pagoda.” Offered with tools, books, and a copy of the data card, this is a revered vintage vehicle with the modern reliability to be driven with confidence – a stylish, open-air, two-seat roadster with the ability to be transformed into a comfortable, all-weather grand tourer in a matter of moments. For the enthusiast in search of a beautiful, usable classic to drive and enjoy, this Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Roadster is a serious contender.
