From its October 1908 introduction, Henry Ford’s Model T completely revolutionized automobile design, production, and its maker. An uncanny combination of durability, reliability, and affordability, the Model T remained in production for nearly 19 full years with some 15 million examples of the beloved “Tin Lizzie” built. Visually similar to the basic Model T Runabout, the Coupelet joined the lineup for 1915 and 1916. Equipped with a more substantial folding top, the Coupelet also included door windows, a sedan-style windshield, and a larger rear “turtle deck.”
According to correspondence on file, circa the late 1980s, Mark Smith acquired this 1915 Ford Model T Coupelet from Ralph Englestad, the late owner of the famed Imperial Palace Collection. The Coupelet was previously part of the legendary movie-car supplier Pacific Auto Rental of Los Angeles, and used in countless film productions. Mr. Smith fitted a correct, hand-crank engine, replacing the 1921-era unit that had been installed. Since its mild refurbishment, this exceedingly rare and fascinating 1915 Ford Model T Coupelet was used little and mostly stored in static condition. Its fascinating history certainly leaves room for exploration, and it should fit well in any collection of early automobiles.
