One of the last automobiles designed and built under company founder Harry Stutz's purview, the Model G was powered by the 360 cid T-head Wisconsin four, shared with the short-wheelbase Bearcat. Endowed with dual ignition and four valves per cylinder, this advanced powerplant was rated at 80 hp and developed 60 bhp at just 1,500 rpm. More importantly, impressive torque was delivered virtually on command. Innovative engineering included a three-speed gearbox integral with the rear axle and differential, a Harry Stutz hallmark. Several body styles were offered for the Model G chassis, including a six-passenger touring, four-passenger close-coupled touring, and two-passenger roadster – all on the 130" wheelbase chassis – plus the Bearcat on a chassis 10" shorter.
According to notes in its history file, this two-passenger 1919 Stutz Model G Roadster is believed to have never been comprehensively restored. In response to an ad published in Motor Trend magazine, a brigadier general reportedly purchased the Model G in 1957 and retained it for two decades. It was later owned by famed collector William Ruger Sr., who kept it until his passing in 2002. Mark Smith acquired the sporting Model G Roadster in 2020, following an extensive engine service, which is noted in the file. Showing just 28,670 miles on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, the Roadster’s windscreen retains the remnants of an AACA Glidden Tour safety inspection sticker, dated 1965. A highly attractive and prodigious performer once returned to road-ready status, this 1919 Stutz Model G Roadster presents as a wonderful opportunity to acquire an example of one of the most legendary early American marques.
