Marketed as “The Cheapest Automobile in the World – Everybody Should Have One,” the Orient Buckboard was the product of the Waltham Manufacturing Co. of Massachusetts. Originally a bicycle manufacturer that graduated to producing electric vehicles, by 1902, the company was building its own internal combustion engines and released the Buckboard model in 1903 as a mode of economical transportation.

According to Mark Smith’s records on file, this example is believed to be the first one built and was formerly owned by the Henry Ford and Merrick Auto Museums. Purchased by Mr. Smith in 2019, this Orient Buckboard is a fascinating piece of automotive history that could be an outstanding candidate for early motoring events.
