Based on the BMW F22 2 Series coupe, the M235i Racing was offered as an affordable racing car for national racing series and club events. Built alongside the standard model at BMW’s factory using a significant number of production parts, Racing models were shipped to a specialist for final assembly.
The road-going M235i’s turbocharged N55 3.0-liter inline six was retained for the racing variant. Identical except for software tuning, the optimized engine developed 333 hp and 332 lbs./ft. of torque. Another holdover was the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission as BMW engineers wanted to make the car accessible to a wider range of drivers. Lightweight bodywork, wheels, and removal of interior and convenience items contributed to a weight savings of 270 lbs. over the production car. Other highlights included an adjustable KW V3 coil-over suspension system, larger brakes, FIA-certified roll cage, fuel cell, and in-car fire suppression.
Purchased new by its current collector-owner through Laurel BMW of Westmont, Illinois, this 2016 M235i Racing is finished in white and is one of a limited number exported to the US. While similar examples found success in BMW Cup, endurance races, and professional touring classes, this car showed just 10 miles at the time of cataloguing and has never been used on track. Accompanied by original delivery items, the next owner of this factory-built M235i Racing can elect to further preserve it or enjoy this rare BMW in track days and eligible racing events.
