Originally designed by Carrozzeria Ghia of Torino and built by Karmann of Osnabrück, Germany, the Karmann Ghia Coupe debuted at the 1955 Paris Motor Show where it found immediate popularity, and a convertible variant was introduced just two years later. Production continued with minimal changes until 1974, when it was replaced by the Golf-based Scirocco. Unlike previous model years, which were constructed in a 2+2 configuration, the 1974 model replaced the rear seats with a carpeted shelf, making it a true two-seater.
An extremely fine representation of the final production-year Karmann Ghia, this example is finished in Zambezi Green with a beige interior. According to an appraisal on file, while under the ownership of Norman Kassoff of Florida, a four-year restoration by The Wizards, a Miami-based Volkswagen restoration shop, was completed in 2009. The Karmann Ghia subsequently received several awards at venues throughout Florida, including 2nd in Class at the 2013 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance and Best of Show at the 2013 Miami International Auto Show ’s Memory Lane exhibit, where it was reportedly invited by Volkswagen AG to be displayed in their showroom in Germany. The Karmann Ghia was then sold to Miami-based collector Leo Schigiel in 2015, before being acquired by the current owner.
Meticulously restored, this 1974 Karmann Ghia Convertible is equally at home in a museum as any collection devoted to Volkswagen, Italian design, or German-built automobiles.
