On a damp April day in 1972 in Imola, Italy, 70,000 spectators packed the grounds that hosted the inaugural Imola 200 and witnessed, on this fast, old-style Grand Prix circuit, one of the greatest motorcycle races of all time. Ducati had specially prepared eight new desmodromic-valve motorcycles, and in a tremendous upset, Ducati riders Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari defeated the dominant Giacomo Agostini. This victory ushered in a new era for Ducati and set it on course for decades of international success. In 1974, recognizing the victory’s importance, Ducati built 401 homologation specials called the 750 Super Sport, which were road-going versions of the Imola 200 winner.
As documented by the original bill of sale, this sensational example was sold new at Rissman Motors & Cycles in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1975 to Ronald Lattner of Sparks, Nevada. Mr. Lattner retained the Ducati for over 20 years and the 750 SS was eventually purchased by Miami-based collector Leo Schigiel in 2016 from noted collector Larry Bowman of California.
This Super Sport is an incredible example, displaying just 8,552 km when catalogued.
