By the mid-1950s, desert racing had become extremely popular on the West Coast of the US and high-powered motorcycles like this 1957 Triumph TR6 Trophy gave amateur racers a chance of a great result. While many riders simply converted road-going machines, starting in 1949 Triumph offered the TR5 Trophy model, a factory-built scrambler. The Trophy eventually grew to 650 cc with the introduction of the TR6 Trophy in 1956, featuring an aluminum cylinder head, larger Amal carburetor, and higher-compression pistons. With a mid-rise exhaust system, moisture-proof competition magneto, quickly detachable headlight, and knobby tires, the TR6 Trophy was campaigned successfully in thousands of off-road events.
According to the consignor’s records on file, this stellar 1957 Triumph TR6 Trophy belonged to acclaimed desert racer Bob Rickard. Discovered in a shed on Rickard’s family property, it had been last registered in 1959 just prior to Rickard’s stint as a Honda factory rider, culminating in his win at the 1961 Daytona Scrambles. This Trophy was the subject of a meticulous, year-long restoration that was unveiled at the prestigious 2011 Quail Motorcycle Gathering, where it took First Place in the highly competitive European Through 1978 class. Since restoration, the Triumph has been ridden sparingly, preserving its exceptional concours-quality condition. One of the most potent and attractive British motorcycles of the late 1950s, this TR6 Trophy is a world-class example that deserves the attention of even the most demanding connoisseur.
