Porsche sporadically released special derivatives of its 911 flagship including the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, 1974 Carrera RS 3.0, and 1984 911 SC/RS. Continuing this tradition, Porsche introduced a 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport model at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. Built with a “less is more” ethos, the Club Sport was created to satisfy enthusiast demand for a track-inspired road car. Attention was focused on keeping the option code M637 Club Sport as light as possible. Comfort items including the sunroof, air-conditioning, electric windows, rear seats, rear wiper, door pocket lids, fog lamps, undercoating, insulation, and even the passenger sun visor were deleted. Weight savings of approximately 70 kilograms (155 pounds) over standard were realized, however, a radio, sunroof, and air-conditioning could be reinstated on request.
The Club Sport’s 3.2-liter engine was manufactured to blueprint specification and used a revised engine management system, hollow intake valves, and modified air intake. Rated the same 231 hp as the regular Carrera, maximum engine speed was increased by 320 rpm, with many believing true output was closer to 240 hp. Other upgrades included a short-shift gear lever, limited-slip differential, Bilstein sport shock absorbers, thicker sway bars, and revised gearing. A front spoiler, “whale tail” rear spoiler, and market-dependent graphics distinguished the Club Sport’s appearance.
Overall performance was increased with 0-60 mph dropping from 5.5 to 5.4 seconds, and top speed increasing nominally. Testers during the period reported the Club Sport provided a more agile and visceral driving experience than the more luxurious and heavier standard Carrera.
This 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is one of approximately 100 models built between August 1987 and September 1989. Finished in metallic paint-to-sample Linden Green over a black leatherette and black and gray “Celebration” cloth interior, it is believed to be the sole example painted in that hue, a seldom-seen color first offered on the 911 range between 1972 and 1973. According to the accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this example was built for the German market, and later spent time in Japanese and Belgian collections, before being imported into the US by the current owner.
Displaying 47,556 km (29,675 miles) on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this Club Sport presents in outstanding condition throughout. A February 2022 service invoice indicates all fluids were changed, a four-wheel alignment and corner balancing performed, and new tires fitted to the desirable 16" Fuchs alloy wheels. Rare and desirable, the Carrera 3.2 Club Sport was a sublime union of 911 road car and race car.
