The XK140 was launched in 1954 as Jaguar’s top-end tourer and the drophead coupe was the elite offering, featuring a beautiful wooden dash, sumptuous leather seats, and roll-up windows with a substantial, insulated convertible top. This lovely Drophead Coupe was completed in 1955 as a left-hand-drive example with overdrive, and finished in Pearl Grey with a French Grey top and red-piped-gray interior. In 1956, it was shipped to its first owner, F.M. Tunno of Portland, Oregon, and is believed to have remained in his ownership until 2009, when JD Classics – a former British car dealership – purchased the car, before immediately selling it to Robert Jewers, one of the company’s directors. In 2015, the XK140 was acquired via JD Classics by the current owner, a US-based collector of significant sports cars.
In 2016, this very original XK140 underwent a sympathetic cosmetic restoration by JD Classics, and receipts for £30,000 of work accompany the car. The engine was inspected and serviced and the suspension and brakes were adjusted. The interior was re-trimmed in burgundy leather, the body was fully dismantled and painted in its original color, and the brightwork was replated. With the goal of creating an ideal car for vintage tours, the project was approached using JD Classics’ rigorous standards, amounting to a total of 626 hours of labor.
Presented in its sophisticated original color and retaining its original engine, this lovely XK140 is an authentic representation of Jaguar’s opulent top-of-the-line tourer.
