The BMW 02 Series is well known worldwide as a revolutionary model that changed the landscape for small luxury sport coupes. Long the purview of the Porsche and Alfa Romeo, this class of automobile became incredibly popular in the 1960s, and BMW’s tasteful design resonated with a youthful subset of professionals that prized brand recognition, style, and affordable performance. The 1602, 1802, and 2002 were offered in notchback and touring (hatchback) body styles and were built between 1966 and 1976. The desirable 2002 tii was equipped with state-of-the-art Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, updated and strengthened suspension and brakes, and other niceties.

This 2002 tii Touring, chassis 3420408, is one of just 5,873 believed to have been built between 1971 and 1973. William Yee of Sacramento, is the first recorded owner of this tii, and invoices on file from the early 2000s, and a flyer from his sale of the car, offer a glimpse into the fastidious care it received in his ownership. Upgrades noted include the alternator, starter, radiator, and the addition of a five-speed gearbox. Importantly, air-conditioning was also added with a kit from International Conditioning Enterprises Inc.

The touring body style was never sold in North America, making it a scarce commodity in this country. With the tii Touring even rarer, this car represents a relatively infrequent opportunity to acquire an example of one of the most desirable 2002 variants built.

*Please note that this vehicle is titled 1973.
