The Ideal Porsche for Restoration – a 1957 356 A T-1 Speedster
Delivered New to Hoffman Motors Finished in White over Black
Retains Matching-Numbers Engine and Transaxle per Copy of Porsche Kardex
Recently Discovered in Long-Term, Single Family Ownership
Eligible for Numerous Rallies, Concours, and Porsche Club Events
The Porsche presented here is a recently discovered ‘garage-find’ example of the most iconic 356 model – the Speedster.
According to a copy of the Porsche Kardex, this T-1 1600 Speedster was completed in January 1957, finished in white over black vinyl and prepared for delivery to the US, where it was retailed by the official distributor Hoffman Motors in New York. While the car’s earliest history is unknown, it was acquired by a Montgomery, Alabama-based sports car enthusiast in the early 1970s and remained in his family’s ownership for over four decades until its recent sale to the consignor.
Under the previous ownership, the Speedster was repainted red, fitted with Marchal accessory driving lights, and its engine was completely disassembled in anticipation of a full rebuild. Although this work never commenced, the major engine components were retained and are included with the sale, including the original type 616/1 case, heads, cylinders, pistons, camshaft, distributor, fan housing, carburetors, air cleaners, heater boxes, and other ancillaries. A copy of the Porsche Kardex confirms that both the engine and transaxle are the original matching-number components. Additionally, the hood and deck lid are stamped with the last digits of the chassis number, and the Speedster is offered with its original top frame, side curtains, and assorted spares.
Parked in static storage since the early 1990s and presented today in as-found condition, this desirable ’57 356 A Speedster is a prime candidate for a complete concours-quality restoration, outlaw build, or a mechanical re-commissioning, readying it for use in the numerous rallies and Porsche events for which it is eligible.
*Please note that this vehicle has been in long-term static storage and may not be currently operational. It will require mechanical attention prior to road use.
