After years of rejecting the mid-engine road car concept, Enzo Ferrari ultimately capitulated as engine sizes increased and the configuration became more desirable. The design also aligned his passenger cars more closely with the F1 program. In 1971, Ferrari unveiled the 365 GT4 BB at the Torino Motor Show as the successor to the front-engine 365 GTB/4 Daytona. In 1976, the 512 BB was introduced and its evolutionary design improved upon the 365 BB in style, comfort, and performance.
This 1979 Ferrari 512 BB was ordered by Donald L. Weber directly from Maranello in Rosso Chiaro (Light Red) with Pella Nero (Black Leather) interior and red carpets. It sailed from Italy to the US on the MS Nopal Sel in March 1979, where it has resided with its only owner since new. Never intended for the US, the 512 BB had to be federalized upon importation, a task completed by Automotive Compliance Inc. Tastefully customized by Mr. Weber, with subtle changes to the interior including a dyed headliner and the addition of a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, this 512 BB is also fitted with velocity stacks on the carburetors and is not currently equipped with air cleaners.
Fascinating correspondence related to the purchase and federalization are included with the sale, as are the original manuals in folio, and extensive records showing a major belt service in 2013 and an annual service in 2019 performed by Ferrari of Newport Beach. This one-owner, meticulously preserved 512 BB should be a serious consideration for the Ferrari collector.
