Ferruccio Lamborghini’s eponymous marque has evolved from a fledgling upstart into one of the most recognizable and admired sports car manufacturers in the world. Lamborghini’s first foray into the sports car arena was the 1964 launch of the 350 GT, a grand tourer equipped with a 3.5-liter V-12 engine and a two-door coupe body by Carrozzeria Touring. This was quickly followed by the 400 GT in 1966. Debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, the 400 GT with its fabulous double headlights and svelte lines, stunned onlookers and sports car aficionados alike. It was soon apparent that a charging bull had entered the territory formerly dominated by the prancing horse.

The 400 GT 2+2 was very much the big brother to the 350 GT. The engine was enlarged to four liters – hence the 400 model designation – and the cockpit was redesigned to accommodate four seats in a 2+2 configuration. For the driver of greater stature, there was an abundance of headroom and legroom with increased visibility. The performance of the 400 GT 2+2 was formidable with a top speed of 162 mph and acceleration of 0–60 in 5.8 seconds, but mated with a luxurious interior it offered the ultimate driving experience in optimal comfort. Only 247 examples of the 400 GT 2+2 were built, making this Lamborghini as rare as it is remarkable.

This example, chassis 0763, was delivered new to Lamborghini dealer Bob Estes of California, on December 16, 1966. According to Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini test driver and a marque archivist, 0763 was mated with engine no. 0737, which it retains, and was finished in red with a black interior. While its history is largely undocumented, the 400 GT 2+2 appears to have attended the Palm Springs Concours d’Elegance in November 1990, with then-owner Willard Quinn. A year later, it was acquired by Donald L. Weber in California for his collection. As was Mr. Weber’s practice, the Lamborghini immediately entered into a rigorous regime of servicing and maintenance by marque specialists.

Now presenting in metallic silver blue with a navy interior, an unusual but exquisite color combination for a 400 GT 2+2, this Lamborghini has just over 33,000 miles on the odometer and comes with extensive invoices spanning over three decades from Ferrari and Maserati of Costa Mesa and other marque experts, along with photographs, and an engine diagram.

As a rare and impressive example of a Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2, this car offers a unique opportunity to acquire a beautifully presented, top performer of the late 1960s and an excellent candidate for tours and marque-specific events.
