Incorporated in Flint, Michigan in 1869 as a manufacturer of carriages, the highly successful W.A. Paterson Company transitioned, later than many competitors, to automobiles in 1909. Initial models were two-cylinder, air-cooled machines and the company immediately enjoyed the reputation that comes with producing a quality product. Customer loyalty also helped grow the company, with distribution throughout the nation. For the 1910 model year, the Paterson line was refined and upgraded with four-cylinder, liquid-cooled models. As with so many of the early automobile manufacturers, the Paterson company struggled to recover from the financial strain of WWI, but continued in an ever-evolving automotive market through the 1923 model year.
This 30 HP Touring Car joined the consignor’s stable of veteran cars in 1993, having previously been treated to an extensive restoration. While long considered to be a 1912 model, correspondence in the car’s file contends that it may be a 1913. The five-place open coachwork is finished in dark blue and accented by black leather upholstery. Particularly sporting fender lines lend an air of adventure, and the car sits well over its wooden-spoke wheels shod with wide Non Skid tires. In 1994, the owner completed the challenging John o’Groats to Land’s End Veteran Car Club run without a breakdown, a testament to both the car and its driver. A rare sight, the Paterson Touring Car presented here is sure to imbue its next steward’s senses with elements of a romantic era now well over a century in the past.
