The Bentley Mark VI was the firm’s first model to emerge from the new Crewe factory, incorporating independent front suspension and the proven 4,257 cc inline six-cylinder engine from its predecessor, the Mark V. In a significant shift for the company, roughly 80% of the 5,200 Mark VI Bentleys produced were equipped with standard saloon pressed steel bodies. For the more discriminating buyer, custom coachwork was offered by more than 30 outside coachbuilders with H.J. Mulliner designs the most popular, including this Special Saloon.
Chassis B363EW, equipped with engine number B431E, was delivered August 25, 1949 and destined for H.J. Mulliner Ltd., where it was fitted with saloon coachwork, carrying body number 5075. Jack Barclay in London served as its retailer and its first known owner was William Lount of London. Subsequent British owners included R.J. Gatesby, Derek T. Oates, and William B. Louther, before the Bentley joined a prominent Swiss collection in the 1990s. At that time, a comprehensive restoration was undertaken by Walter Köng of Basel, Switzerland. More recently, in 2017, Frank Dale & Stepsons completed an overhaul of the engine, transmission, and brake system. Receipts and photographs chronicle the restoration and extensive service care this car has received.
The Mark VI is presented in a two-tone combination of dark green and black paintwork set off by a striking shade of red selected for interior hides and carpets. A chrome molding highlights the curvature of the waistline and full wheel skirts accentuate its flowing lines. Additional features include center-opening doors, Hooper-style quarter lights, and a sliding sunroof. In sum, these elements make for a delightful owner-driven saloon that is an excellent coachbuilt representative of Bentley’s earliest Crewe offerings.
