Among automotive enthusiasts who appreciate engineering genius, Lancia’s Lambda is highly regarded as a technical masterpiece. Advanced when it debuted in 1922, the combination of its monocoque chassis, independent, sliding-pillar front suspension, four-wheel brakes, and a narrow-angle, single-head, 2,568 cc V-4 engine delivered 68 hp and exhilarating performance through a four-speed gearbox. The Lancia presented here is a most unique 1928 8th Series Lambda in strikingly original and unmodified condition.

Delivered new to a family in Portugal, the short-wheelbase torpedo-styled Lambda remained in the family’s care for the next 92 years, accumulating a scant 55,000 kilometers, (just over 34,000 miles). The coachwork was refinished in the 1980s in its original, as-delivered colors. The car was not disassembled at that time to preserve its factory panel fit. All chrome trim is believed to be original, including the rear panel latches, whose stamped numbers match the body number debossed into an original floorboard panel. The splendor of the interior is highlighted by the original 1928 burgundy leather hides on the front and rear seats, door panels, and interior trim. The Jaeger gauges set in the lovely patinated instrument panel report engine revs, speed, fuel level, and oil pressure. Recently, the Lambda has been brought back to running condition, following a long period of dry storage, and comes complete with original and period tools, jack, handbook, and registration documents.

This late-series Lambda remains true to its original formula, while benefiting from mechanical improvements. Loved and cared for by its family, this astoundingly well-preserved specimen would make an excellent preservation candidate on the concours field and is also Mille Miglia eligible. This is a timely offering as the 100th anniversary of the Lambda model approaches—an excellent opportunity to showcase Lancia’s engineering expertise.
