At the New York Auto Show in March 1997, Porsche unveiled the final and most advanced evolution of its revered air-cooled platform, the 993 Turbo S. The midyear introduction was based on the already groundbreaking Turbo model, which had evoked the cutting-edge 959 supercar, with specifications including a twin-turbocharged engine, six-speed transaxle, and four-wheel drive.
The 993 Turbo S was distinguished from the standard Turbo through improved performance and myriad aesthetic details, including a tuned engine, GT2 oil cooler, rear fender vents, yellow brake calipers, and unique wheel treatment, among many other special features. Built to an exceptional standard and outfitted with the most exotic equipment, including extensive interior carbon fiber trim and the Aerokit Turbo II package, this was a flagship model built in limited numbers by the famed Exclusive Department, Porsche’s in-house customization and premium build shop. In this respect, the 993 Turbo S followed in the footsteps of other rare, turbocharged models built by Porsche Exclusive such as the 930 LE, 964 Turbo S Leichtbau, 964 Turbo S Flachbau, and 993 Turbo Cabriolet.
This desirably optioned, low-mileage Turbo S perfectly illustrates why this model was such a brilliant conclusion to the beloved 993 series.
Of the 342 Turbo S examples built, this car is one of only 23 finished in vivid Speed Yellow and just five examples built to a very desirable factory specification. As confirmed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this Turbo S was specially equipped with the ultra-desirable hardback sport seats painted body color, while the standard rear seats and rear window wiper were deleted. The result is the only Speed Yellow Turbo S that possesses a look and character similar to the legendary 993 GT2, Porsche’s track-focused homologation special.
Completed on June 17, 1997, this Porsche was delivered new to its first owner in Illinois and it remained in his care until 2002. In 2005, after passing through two interim owners in Tennessee and Florida, the Turbo S was sold to a Northern California-based enthusiast with a collection of limited-production Ferraris and Porsches. During his decade-long ownership the Turbo S benefited from sparing use and, since 2016, it has been kept in the care of two knowledgeable Porsche collectors.
Today, the Turbo S remains in spectacular original condition throughout, showing just 4,035 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloging. Consistent with its impressive presentation, the car is offered with both sets of keys, tool roll, spare assembly, and the leather folio containing the original owner’s manual, warranty book, radio code card, dealer directory, and other factory supplements. The Porsche is also accompanied by a file containing a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a CARFAX vehicle history report, and service records. As the invoices on file attest, this Turbo S has been regularly maintained by authorized US Porsche dealers for the past 15 years.
With only 342 examples built in total, of which only 276 were specified in left-hand drive, the Turbo S is a true rarity among air-cooled 911s and offers brilliant performance – especially for a 20-year-old classic. To find a low-mileage car such as this, with its desirable GT2-inspired options, Speed Yellow livery, and well-documented history, is extremely rare today, warranting serious consideration from the most discerning Porsche collectors.
