In the early 1950s, Ford Motor Company created the Continental Division to accomplish something unparalleled – to build the most opulent and exclusive personal luxury car of its time. Under the direction of Edsel Ford, chief stylist John Reinhart and designer Gordon Buehrig, and a select staff, quickly set to work on the low-volume, high-dollar flagship. In a departure from the flamboyant, chrome-laden designs of the period, the magnificent Continental Mark II displayed an uncommon simplicity and purity of line, and was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955. Today, the Mark II’s exquisite form remains as remarkable as the day of its historic debut.
This striking Continental is offered from a private California collection and has seen use as an occasional driver throughout its four-year tenure with the owner. Included with the sale is a file of receipts totaling over $41,000, detailing extensive restorative and maintenance work performed. The air-conditioned Mark II was refinished in recent years in metallic white pearl, which beautifully complements the black and white interior in the original biscuit-and-bolster pattern.
The Continental is a true modern classic that has aged particularly gracefully, with just 3,005 examples built throughout the model’s brief production run. Having represented the height of elegance and exclusivity in its day, it is fair to say that the unmistakable silhouette and subtle details of its design earn the Continental Mark II a place among the finest achievements in the celebrated history of the Ford Motor Company.
