As American manufacturers competed in the marketplace with ever-larger engines in the early 1960s, Chevrolet revised their 348 cid V-8 to 409 cid; with the optional dual-quad induction, the 409 hp version was achieved. Many of the 409 hp Impala coupes, and even a few convertibles, quickly proved to be competitive in drag racing and were conscripted into service at quarter-mile tracks across the country.
According to the consignor, at the time of purchase, this immaculate 1962 Impala 409 Convertible showed signs of an extensive drag racing past, based upon numerous stressed components and evidence that a roll cage had once been installed. Still, the 409 was a prime candidate for a top-level restoration and was entrusted to the renowned Nicks Old Car Specialty, in Redlands, California, which has over 50 concours Best of Show awards to its credit. The Impala was completely disassembled, and its components were mechanically and cosmetically restored or replaced as necessary. The consignor reports that no expense was spared in the thorough renewal of this Impala, with fit and finish exceeding factory standards in numerous areas. The body was prepped and hand fit, without filler, before being refinished in its original Ermine White (code 93.6), using period-appropriate materials to achieve a surface impossible to duplicate with modern paints.
Close inspection reveals superb attention to detail, inside and out, with NOS parts used at all points possible. As the project came together, new glass, moldings, wiring loom, upholstery, top, carpet, chrome, and polished stainless trim were artfully assembled and installed. The engine bay appears as new, displaying proper finishes and components, including a pair of the ultra-rare stock 409 exhaust manifolds that were so often discarded in period in favor of custom headers. The extensive experience of Nicks Old Car Specialty is reflected not only in the details of this spectacular Chevrolet but also in its driving dynamics and manners on the road.
With just over 50 miles covered since its completion, this is likely one of the finest stock Impala 409 Convertibles ever finished to a concours standard; any collector should be proud to add it to their refined collection.
