A Superbly Presented Example of a World-Renowned Icon
Few vehicles have the ingenious simplicity of the ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle. Millions upon millions of Beetles were assembled in factories all over the world, yet sometimes one in particular stands out. The 1955 oval-window Beetle proudly presented here is the result of a keen aesthetic eye and thousands of hours of collective effort. According to a 2001 article published in Hot VWs magazine, this fortunate “Oval” was purchased by an enthusiast in 1990 and painstakingly restored between 1994 and 1999. As with many labors of love, the goal for the final product escalated along the way. Utilizing many of California’s most respected Volkswagen specialists and historians, the Beetle was methodically disassembled, restored, refinished, and accessorized to create one of the area’s finest stock-look Beetles.
While the body was refinished using PPG two-stage paint in the fantastic 1955 Volkswagen color of Strato Silver, and the pan was being completed, a worldwide search began for numerous rare parts to complete and accentuate the car. New old stock semaphores were sourced, along with proper Volkswagen-logo headlamp lenses, a Golde sunroof mechanism, a spare-wheel-mounted Hazet tool kit, and Robri-style aluminum fender guards. Capping the accessories is the Judson supercharger that was incorporated into the brilliantly assembled driveline, courtesy of the renowned Joe “Mr. Okrasa” Ruiz of Anaheim, California. Red Oxen vinyl, trimmed in the proper H-pattern was wisely chosen for the interior, and a Judson boost gauge is juxtaposed with a period Volkswagen flower bud vase on the dash.
The overall presentation of the Volkswagen is simply fabulous and the fact that most of the restoration was performed over 20 years ago speaks to the quality of the work. If you are thinking of adding a vintage Beetle to your collection, this awesome “Oval” is worth a very close look.
