The Speedster is one of the most influential and beloved models in Porsche’s history. It was originally created at the request of legendary US importer Max Hoffman, who saw a demand for a lightweight sports car, one that would appeal to both sporting drivers and hardcore weekend racers. Porsche took Hoffman’s advice and created a lightened 356 with a lower windshield, race-inspired bucket seats, and a minimal top. The model was incredibly successful, and Porsche commemorated it with Speedster versions in 1989, 1994, 2011, and 2018.
This latest generation, the 991 Speedster, shares its underpinnings with the highly regarded 991 GT3 and produces over 500 hp at 9,000 rpm. A nod to its roots as an analog sports car, a six-speed manual was the only gearbox offered. Only 1,948 examples were built, commemorating the first year of the 356.
