The 911 SC, or Super Carrera, was unveiled in 1978, the same year that Porsche began production of its heir apparent – the all-new, front-engine 928. A credit to its impressive all-around performance, incredible reliability, and unique character, the SC marked the beginning of a second golden era for the air-cooled 911 and saved the model from an uncertain fate.
This striking and remarkably well-kept 911 SC Targa was completed by Porsche in February 1978, finished in the fashionable period color scheme of Copper Brown Metallic with Cork leather and pinstripe cloth upholstery. According to the accompanying Porsche Production Specifications Certificate, this car was built for the US market, optioned with air-conditioning, power windows, a center console, and sports steering wheel.
The Porsche’s first known owner was Jim Clamp, a real estate executive from Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose father participated in the famed Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In the late 1980s, Mr. Clamp sold his Targa to the proprietor of Foreign Car Engineering, the local specialist that serviced the 911 during his ownership. The Porsche remained in the care of its second owner until 2015, when it was sold to the current owner, an East Coast collector with an affinity for well-preserved, unrestored cars.
Used sparingly since, the Targa showed less than 60,000 miles at the time of cataloging and presents beautifully in all respects, particularly the interior, which remains in excellent original condition. Accompanied by a proper 1978 model owner’s manual, maintenance book, Blaupunkt radio supplement, tool kit, and tire inflator, this 911 SC is a superb example of a landmark Porsche model.
