Mercedes-Benz’s legendary W111 Series was all new for 1961 and was particularly elegant with its sleek 2+2 pillarless coupe proportions and distinctive C-pillar. Its hand-finished details held production to just 13 cars per week.

Desirably equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, power steering, and a Becker Mexico TR radio, this 220 SEb was delivered in Europe to an American buyer, and its first two services were performed in Vienna and Monaco. Later imported to California, the Mercedes-Benz received a comprehensive, documented restoration between 1980 and 1983 that achieved 99-plus point scores at numerous concours d’elegance. It has been featured in a Road and Track road test article and the Mercedes-Benz Club of America magazine.

In 2008, this 220 SEb was entrusted to the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California, for extensive mechanical freshening. Two years later, it received period-correct Behr air-conditioning with a modern compressor for superior cooling. Since the early 1980s this 220 SEb Coupe has had just three owners – all MBCA members. The car has been extensively detailed and presents exceptionally well; it also was recently serviced by a marque expert to assure proper operation. The Coupe is accompanied by the original owner’s manual, a service booklet (with numerous period entries), data cards, registration cards, restoration and service documentation, tool roll, and jack. A beautiful example that would be prohibitively expensive to duplicate, this outstanding Mercedes-Benz will surely draw the attention of discerning marque connoisseurs.
